Cities in Citrus County FL

Originally called Tompkinsville, Inverness received its current name in the early 1900s to honor its sister city across the pond in Scotland.

To give you a feel for the character of this region, the County Seat got moved here in the late 1890s. However, the county clerk at that time refused to be moved. So they got creative. Both the clerk and his desk were “stolen” and transported to Inverness. The Citrus County Courthouse with a huge clock tower got built in 1912. Today the courthouse remains as a historical museum.

For apes who love oranges instead of bananas, you’ll be happy to know that every October Inverness hosts the Cooter Festival, which is all about citrus! The name comes from a specific critter – the Cooter turtle that’s both a resident here and a periodic pet. Besides food, the Cooter Festival provides kayak races, live music and a carnival atmosphere for children of all ages.

For apes hoping to settle here, you’ll be pleased to find large swinging trees and amazing lake properties. It’s a wonderful town for people with families looking for a slower pace compared to larger cities.
